How redirects work on Shopify

Redirects keep your rankings and links working when URLs change, whether you are moving platform or tidying up products. These four rules save most of the problems we see.

Broken URLs only

Redirects only fire on 404s

Shopify ignores a redirect while the old URL still loads a page. Delete, draft or hide the old item first, or the redirect never runs.

Closest match

Don't send everything home

Point each old URL at the page that replaces it. Mass redirects to the homepage can be treated as missing pages, and their rankings fade.

One hop

Avoid redirect chains

If A goes to B and B goes to C, send A straight to C. Each extra hop slows the page and wastes crawl time. The builder shortens chains for you.

After launch

Watch Search Console

Check the Pages report for new 404s in the weeks after a change, and add redirects for anything you missed. Keep the redirects in place for good.

FAQ

Shopify redirect questions

What is a 301 redirect?

A permanent redirect. It tells browsers and Google that a page has moved for good, so visitors land on the new URL and most of the old page's ranking signals pass across. Shopify's URL redirects are 301s.

Why isn't my Shopify redirect working?

Usually because the old URL still loads a page: Shopify only redirects URLs that return a 404. Other causes are a query string in the old URL, a blocked path such as /cart or /apps, or your browser remembering an earlier redirect. Test in a private window.

Which URLs can't be redirected on Shopify?

Your homepage, URLs starting /apps, /cart, /orders, /services or /shop, collection tag URLs such as /collections/scarves/red, and reserved URLs such as /products, /collections and /collections/all. The builder flags all of these.

How many redirects can a Shopify store have?

Up to 100,000 on standard plans and 20 million on Shopify Plus. If your list is bigger, focus on URLs that have traffic or backlinks first.

Is anything I paste stored?

No. The builder runs entirely in your browser. Nothing you paste is sent anywhere or saved.
