How we chose
An independent list
Schema markup (structured data) tells search engines what a page is: a product, its price, whether it's in stock, its reviews. Dozens of Shopify apps add it, and most "best schema app" lists are written by app makers. For this one we:
- read each app's own Shopify App Store listing for ratings, plans and the schema types it claims
- checked what Shopify's own themes, Dawn and Horizon, output on their own
- checked every claim against Google's current documentation, including what changed in 2026
- noted the catch with each app, not just the features
In short
Your theme probably already outputs Product and Organization schema. Test a product page in Google's Rich Results Test before installing anything. The gaps worth filling are usually breadcrumbs, review stars (often handled by your review app) and shipping and return details (better set in Merchant Center). If you need an app, Webrex's schema app has the most generous free plan. Use one source for each type, never two, and ignore FAQ schema as a selling point: Google stopped showing FAQ rich results in May 2026.
Before you install
What your theme already does
Shopify's own themes, Dawn and Horizon, output some schema without any app. Here's what they cover and what's left.
Covered by your theme
Product and price
Name, price, currency, availability and variants on every product page, from Shopify's built-in product data.
Covered by your theme
Organization
Your store name, logo and website on every page. Dawn also adds your social profile links.
Missing
Breadcrumbs
Neither Dawn nor Horizon outputs breadcrumb markup. Worth adding, though Google now shows breadcrumbs on desktop results only.
Missing, or set elsewhere
Shipping and returns
Not in the theme. Google uses your Merchant Center or Search Console settings ahead of markup on your site, so set your policies there first.
Usually your review app
Review stars
Rating markup normally comes from your review app. Judge.me, for example, adds it by default, so a schema app on top can duplicate it.
Two-minute check
See what you have
Run a product page through Google's Rich Results Test, look at the Merchant listings and Product snippets reports in Search Console, and note which app adds your review stars. Then decide what's actually missing.

Read the listing carefully
Four things to watch for
Duplicate markup
Your theme, your review app and a schema app can each add product or rating markup. Pick one source for each type and switch the others off. Judge.me, for example, lets you turn its markup off if another app handles reviews.
FAQ and HowTo schema
Several apps still sell these. Google stopped showing HowTo rich results in 2023 and FAQ rich results on 7 May 2026, so they're no reason to choose an app.
AI search claims
Many listings promise better AI visibility. Google says there's no special schema you need for its AI features. Accurate schema still helps, but it isn't an AI shortcut. Our guide explains why.
Brand-new apps
Schemalicious, Meetanshi Schema & SEO AI and Schema Markup Snippets by Nabu all launched in 2026 with five reviews or fewer between them. Worth watching, but too new to judge.
FAQ
Schema app questions
Does Shopify add schema automatically?
Partly. Shopify's own themes output Product markup on product pages and Organization markup on every page. Breadcrumbs, review stars and shipping and return details usually come from elsewhere. Other themes vary, so test yours.
Do I need a schema app?
Only if a check shows a gap you care about. Run a product page through Google's Rich Results Test first. Many stores need nothing more than their theme, their review app and up-to-date Merchant Center settings.
Does schema help with AI search?
Not directly. Google says there's no special schema you need for its AI features. Accurate schema still makes pages eligible for rich results, and product data feeds shopping features.
Does FAQ schema still work?
Not for Google rich results. They stopped showing on 7 May 2026. FAQPage is still valid markup, but there's no Google feature left to gain from it.
Can I run two schema apps?
Avoid it. Two apps (or an app plus your theme) can give Google two different versions of the same product. Choose one source for each type and turn the rest off. Several apps include a duplicate check to help.
