How we chose
An independent list
AI visibility tools ask AI assistants the questions your customers ask, then record whether your brand appears, where, and which websites the answer cites. There are dozens of them, and almost every "best tools" list online is written by one of the vendors. For this one we:
- use Google Search Console, GA4, Bing Webmaster Tools, Semrush and Ahrefs ourselves, on our own stores and client work
- read each tool's own pricing and product pages for the rest, rather than relying on other lists
- picked tools a Shopify store owner can actually buy or use, not only enterprise platforms
- noted the catch with each one, not just the features
In short
Start with the free reports already in Google Search Console, GA4 and Bing Webmaster Tools, plus a monthly manual check. Pay for a tracker only when you want the same questions checked every day. For most small Shopify stores the cheapest sensible option is Otterly.AI, from $29 a month. Peec AI is the one to look at if you want tracking product by product from your Shopify catalogue.

Free tools to start with
Most Shopify stores can learn a lot without paying for anything.
Free · we use it
Google Search Console
The Generative AI performance report shows how often links to your site appear in Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode, by page, country, device and date. It reached all sites at the end of August 2026.
Watch out for: it shows impressions, with AI Overviews and AI Mode combined into one figure. It may not appear for sites with very little traffic, and the same impressions are also in your normal Performance report, so don't add the two together.
Free · we use it
GA4: AI Assistant channel
Since May 2026, GA4's default channels include AI Assistant: visitors who arrive from ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot and similar tools. It's the simplest way to see whether AI answers send you real visitors, and whether they buy.
Watch out for: clicks from Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode count as Organic Search, not AI Assistant. Some smaller AI tools may still show as Referral.
Free · we use it
Bing Webmaster Tools
The AI Performance report shows how often Microsoft Copilot and Bing's AI summaries cite your pages, which pages, and sample grounding queries the AI used to find them.
Watch out for: it shows citations, not clicks, and the grounding queries are a sample. Copilot's audience is smaller than ChatGPT's or Google's, but it's a useful early signal.
Free · ours
Cape Wired AI Visibility Checker
Our free checker writes 12 questions your customers are likely to ask, links you straight to ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and Perplexity for each one, and scores what comes back. It shows you the actual answers, not just a number.
Watch out for: it's manual and takes about 20 minutes. Run it monthly with the same questions to spot changes. Use the AI Visibility Checker
Free
HubSpot AI Search Grader
HubSpot's free grader gives your brand a score out of 100 based on what OpenAI, Perplexity and Gemini models say about it. A short form unlocks the full results.
Watch out for: it reflects what the models learned in training, not live answers or citations. Treat it as a one-off snapshot, not tracking.
Daily tracking
Paid trackers for small and growing stores
Worth it when you're actively working on AI visibility and want the same questions checked every day.
From $29 a month
Otterly.AI
A straightforward tracker for brand mentions, citations and share of voice. The cheapest plan covers ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity and Microsoft Copilot, with Google AI Mode, Gemini and Claude as paid add-ons.
Paid from: Lite, $29/month for 15 prompts checked daily.
Free trial: yes.
Watch out for: 15 prompts go quickly once you add products and competitors, and AI Mode costs $9 a month extra on Lite.
From €85 a month
Peec AI
Tracks visibility, position, sentiment and the sources AI answers cite. Its AI Shopping tracking can pull your product catalogue from Shopify (or a CSV) and track at SKU level, the one clear ecommerce feature in this list.
Paid from: Starter, €85/month for 50 prompts and 3 AI models of your choice, checked daily.
Free trial: yes.
Watch out for: Perplexity, Claude and some other models are on Enterprise only.
We use Ahrefs
Ahrefs Brand Radar
If you already pay for Ahrefs, Brand Radar adds AI mentions, citations and AI share of voice across AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Copilot, plus your own prompts.
Paid from: 5 custom prompts come with Ahrefs Lite (£99/month); extra prompt packages from £40/month; the full AI index from £159/month.
Watch out for: good value if you're already on Ahrefs, expensive if you're not.
We use Semrush
Semrush
Semrush sells AI tracking inside its SEO + AI Search plans: brand performance and daily prompt tracking across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, AI Overviews and AI Mode.
Paid from: Starter, £161/month with 50 prompts tracked daily (less billed yearly).
Free trial: 7 days.
Watch out for: it's priced as a full SEO suite, so it suits stores that will use the SEO tools too.
Bigger budgets
For bigger brands, and Shopify apps
More than most Shopify stores need, but worth knowing about.
From $295 a month
AthenaHQ
Covers the widest range of AI engines here, from ChatGPT and Google to Claude, Copilot, Grok, DeepSeek, Meta AI and Mistral, and lists a Shopify integration on its paid plans.
Free option: a free Essential plan with 300 credits (one credit is one AI answer).
Watch out for: the jump from free to $295 a month is steep for a small store.
From $300 a month
Scrunch
Built for marketing teams: custom and industry prompts, personas and page audits across ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, AI Mode, AI Overviews and Meta.
Free trial: 7 days, no card needed.
Watch out for: $250 a month even billed yearly.
Custom pricing
Profound
An enterprise platform that no longer sells self-serve plans. There's a free 7-day trial (50 prompts across ChatGPT, Gemini and AI Overviews), then pricing through sales.
Watch out for: only worth a conversation for large brands.
Early days
Shopify apps
Several Shopify apps now promise AI visibility tracking, for example Kwik GEO, FoundGPT and Visibly AI. All three launched in 2026, have only a handful of reviews and none has the Built for Shopify badge.
Watch out for: the cheapest plans are limited (FoundGPT Lite, $19/month, gives 6 visibility checks a month). For now we'd start with the free reports or one of the trackers above.
Before you pay
Do you need a paid tool at all?
Probably not yet, if:
- you get fewer than a few hundred visits a month from Google, so there's little for a tracker to measure
- you haven't fixed the basics AI tools rely on: clear product pages, an About page, reviews and consistent business details
A paid tracker earns its place when you're working on AI visibility and want to see the effect of each change across the same 30 to 50 questions every day. Until then, the Search Console and GA4 reports plus a monthly manual check tell you most of what you need. Our guide How to measure AI search visibility walks through that routine.
Good to know
What no tool can tell you
AI answers change
The same question can get a different answer tomorrow, or for someone in another town. Trackers sample answers. They don't give you a fixed ranking.
Mentions aren't sales
Pair any tracker with GA4's AI Assistant channel, so you can see whether being mentioned brings in orders.
Tools don't fix anything
They show where you stand. Improving it takes better product pages, reviews and mentions on other sites. See how to get your brand recommended by AI.
FAQ
AI visibility tool questions
What is an AI visibility tool?
A tool that asks AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity a set of questions, then records whether your brand is mentioned, how it's described and which websites the answer cites.
Can Google Search Console show AI Overviews traffic?
Yes. The Generative AI performance report shows impressions from AI Overviews and AI Mode together. It doesn't separate the two.
How do I see visits from ChatGPT in GA4?
Look at the AI Assistant channel in your traffic acquisition report. It covers ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot and similar tools. Visits from Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode count as Organic Search instead.
What is the cheapest AI visibility tracker?
Of the trackers we checked, Otterly.AI's Lite plan at $29 a month is the cheapest for daily tracking. Free options include the Google and Bing reports and our AI Visibility Checker.
Do I need one if I sell on Shopify?
Not to start with. Use the free reports first, and add a tracker when you're actively working on AI visibility and want daily data.
