How Much Does Ecommerce SEO Cost in the UK?
What ecommerce SEO costs, what changes the price, and how to judge whether a quote is good value for your store.
Ecommerce SEO is usually priced in three ways: a one-off audit or review, a fixed-scope project, or monthly support. The price depends mainly on catalogue size, the technical condition of the store, how much content is needed and whether the work includes implementation or only recommendations. At Cape Wired, a Technical SEO Audit is £950, an Ecommerce SEO Review starts at £1,250, implementation projects start at £2,500, and monthly support starts at £1,250 a month. Large, international or technically complex stores are quoted individually.
Most businesses ask about SEO pricing before anything else, and most providers avoid answering. That makes it hard to compare quotes, plan a budget or know whether a price is realistic.
This guide explains how ecommerce SEO is priced, what drives the cost up or down, what each level of budget can realistically achieve, and how to work out whether the investment makes sense for your margins. Where it helps, it uses Cape Wired's own published prices as worked examples.

Why do ecommerce SEO prices vary so much?
Two quotes for "ecommerce SEO" can describe completely different pieces of work. One might be a light keyword report. Another might include technical fixes, rewritten collection pages, new content and implementation inside Shopify. Before comparing prices, compare what is actually being delivered.
The factors that most affect cost are:
- Catalogue size and structure. A store with 40 products and five collections needs far less work than one with 3,000 products, variants and layered filters.
- Technical condition. Indexing problems, duplicate URLs, slow templates or a messy migration history add investigation and fixes before growth work can start.
- Content requirements. Collection copy, buying guides and supporting articles take research and writing time.
- Implementation. Recommendations alone cost less than recommendations plus the work to put them live.
- Markets and languages. Each additional country or language adds research, structure and checking.
- Competition and pace. Crowded categories, or a need to move quickly, usually mean more work each month.
What are the main ecommerce SEO pricing models?
| Model | How it works | Best for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| One-off audit or review | A fixed fee for a diagnosis and a prioritised action plan | Understanding what is holding a store back before committing to more | An audit that lists issues without priorities or next steps |
| Fixed-scope project | A defined set of pages or tasks for an agreed price | Improving priority collections, products or a content cluster | A vague scope that leaves out implementation or measurement |
| Monthly support (retainer) | An agreed amount of research, implementation and reporting each month | Steady, compounding progress on an established store | Retainers with no clear monthly deliverables |
| Hourly or day rate | Time billed as it is used | Small, clearly defined tasks | Open-ended budgets with no agreed outcome |
| Performance-based | Fees tied to rankings or traffic | Rarely the right fit | Incentives to chase easy keywords rather than revenue |
What does each level of ecommerce SEO budget buy?
As a practical example, here is how Cape Wired's published starting prices map to different stages. Starting prices assume a clearly defined scope and a store of manageable size.
| Service | Price | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| Technical SEO Audit | £950 fixed fee | Crawl, indexation, canonicals, redirects, architecture, rendering, performance and schema checks, with a findings register and walkthrough call |
| Ecommerce SEO Review | From £1,250 | Search Console and analytics review, technical checks, product and collection template review, search intent and competitor analysis, and a prioritised implementation plan |
| Priority page optimisation | From £950 | Up to five priority product pages and one collection page, improved and implemented |
| Ecommerce SEO Optimisation Project | From £2,500 | Research, titles, metadata, structure, internal links and FAQs for one priority collection and up to three related product pages, implemented in Shopify |
| Optimisation and Content Cluster | From £4,000 | One pillar page or buying guide, three supporting articles, one priority collection and selected product improvements, connected with internal links |
| Ecommerce SEO and GEO Support | From £1,250 a month | Monthly priorities, technical monitoring, defined product, collection or content work, and search and AI visibility reporting |
| Ecommerce SEO Growth | From £2,000 a month | A faster pace with regular content, broader optimisation, technical implementation and detailed measurement |
| Large or international stores | Price on request | Large catalogues, multiple countries or languages, headless builds, faceted navigation or major technical remediation |
For most established stores, the lowest-risk route is a diagnostic first (an audit or review), then a focused implementation project on the pages with the most commercial potential, and only then ongoing support once you can see what is working.
Looking at AI search visibility as well? Many of the foundations overlap with SEO. See How Much Does GEO and AI Search Optimisation Cost? for GEO reviews, projects and monthly support.
What is usually quoted separately?
Some work varies so much from store to store that it rarely fits inside a starting price. Expect these to be scoped and priced individually:
- very large catalogues
- extensive content production
- digital PR and active link acquisition
- major theme or template development
- platform migrations
- translation and additional international markets
If a quote looks unusually cheap, check whether these are excluded, or whether they are included at a level too small to make a difference.
Should you pay for advice or for implementation?
An audit that sits in a shared folder does not change rankings. The real cost of SEO includes the time to put recommendations live: rewriting collection copy, fixing templates, adjusting internal links, updating metadata and checking the result.
When comparing quotes, ask who does that work. If it is your own team or a separate developer, add their time to the comparison. A higher quote that includes implementation can be cheaper overall than a low quote that leaves you with a to-do list.
On Shopify stores, Cape Wired can implement most product, collection, internal-link, content and custom-section improvements directly, rather than handing over recommendations alone.
How do you work out whether ecommerce SEO is worth the cost?
Judge SEO against gross profit, not revenue. A simple way to sense-check a budget is to work out how many extra orders it would take to cover the cost. To model the upside, our free revenue calculator shows what more visitors, a higher conversion rate or a larger average order could add over a year.
| Illustrative example | Figure |
|---|---|
| Average order value | £60 |
| Gross margin | 40% |
| Gross profit per order | £24 |
| Project cost | £2,500 |
| Extra orders needed to cover the project | about 105 (£2,500 ÷ £24) |
| Spread over 12 months | about 9 extra orders a month |
This is an example calculation, not a forecast. It does not include repeat purchases or customer lifetime value, which usually make the case stronger, and it does not guarantee any result. It does make the decision concrete: if your store has relevant search demand and pages that could realistically win more of it, the target becomes something you can measure.
SEO also tends to build over time. Improvements to a collection page can keep earning traffic long after the project ends, which is different from paid advertising, where traffic stops when spending stops. Freelancer, agency or in-house: which costs less?
Each option can be good value in the right situation.
- Freelancer or founder-led consultancy: often lower overheads and direct access to the person doing the work. Check capacity and whether implementation is included.
- Larger agency: more people and wider services, which suits large programmes. Check who actually works on your account and how much of the fee covers account management.
- In-house hire: best when there is enough ongoing work to justify a salary, training and tools. Many smaller stores start with outside help and bring the work in-house later.
What are the red flags in an ecommerce SEO quote?
- Guaranteed rankings. Google states that no one can guarantee a number one ranking.
- Link packages sold by volume. Buying links to manipulate rankings breaks Google's spam policies and can harm the site.
- No defined deliverables. You should know what will be done each month or within the project.
- No implementation plan. Recommendations with no route to going live.
- Reporting on rankings only. Rankings without clicks, traffic, orders and revenue tell you little.
- Long lock-in contracts with no review points or exit terms.
- A price with no questions asked. A credible quote depends on your catalogue, platform and goals.
What should you ask before hiring an ecommerce SEO provider?
- What exactly is included, and what is quoted separately?
- Who will do the work, and who implements the changes?
- Which pages will you focus on first, and why?
- How will you measure progress, and how often will we review it?
- Have you worked with stores on our platform and of a similar size?
- What happens at the end of the project or if we want to stop?
Frequently asked questions
Ecommerce SEO cost FAQs
How much does ecommerce SEO cost per month?
Monthly costs depend on how much research, implementation and content is included. At Cape Wired, ongoing ecommerce SEO and GEO support starts at £1,250 a month, and a faster growth programme starts at £2,000 a month. Larger or international stores are scoped individually.
Is a one-off SEO audit enough?
An audit is the right starting point when you need to know what is wrong and what to fix first. It only creates results once the recommendations are implemented, so budget for that work too, whether you do it yourself or hire someone.
Is SEO cheaper than paid advertising?
They work differently. Paid ads can bring traffic immediately but stop when spending stops. SEO takes longer to build, but improvements to important pages can keep earning traffic afterwards. Many stores use both.
Can I do ecommerce SEO myself?
Yes, many store owners handle the basics, such as clear product and collection copy, sensible titles and good internal links. Outside help is most useful for technical problems, prioritisation and larger content projects.
Does the price include Shopify implementation?
Cape Wired's optimisation and content projects include Shopify implementation of the agreed changes, and monthly support includes defined implementation work each month. Major theme development and migrations are quoted separately.
Do you work with stores outside the UK?
Yes. Cape Wired is based in Cambridgeshire, UK, and works with clients worldwide. Prices are shown in pounds sterling, and stores selling into several countries or languages are quoted individually.
